Why is it not enough to manufacture only as per specification?

This is a very famous case study of Ford transmission system vs Japanese transmission system.

Both were manufactured as per drawing. But the difference was in the consistency. Japanese parts consistency was much higher. They were not just matching drawing specifications. But were very close to each other. Which means technically their process capability was much higher than their competition.

In this video you will see Ford employees confessing the truth.

“We knew our competition was tough, we were good, but they were damn good”.

“The competition made us rethink about the basic of the business”.

“Building parts to print (Drawing) is not good enough”

These are some of the feedback of Ford Employees. I think it is brave of Ford to Document their failure in the form of video and publish it.
